Closing with Intention: The Final Step to Trauma-Informed Teaching

Namaste, Reader!

As we conclude our Teaching Yoga with a Trauma-Informed Lens series, we turn our attention to the seventh and final principle: Closing Out with Intention.

In trauma-informed yoga, how we close a class is as vital as how we begin. Ending with intention helps create a sense of safety, stability, and integration for your students. A thoughtful close reinforces the value of the time spent together, fostering a lasting sense of connection and calm.

Here are some practices for closing your sessions with care:

  • Grounding Practices: Offer gentle breathwork or mindfulness exercises to help students transition from practice to their day.
  • Express Gratitude: Acknowledge the effort and presence your students brought to the space. A simple "thank you for showing up today" can be deeply affirming.
  • Empowerment Statements: Leave your students with uplifting words, reminding them of their own strength and ability to navigate life’s challenges.
  • Consistency: Establish a predictable closing ritual, such as repeating the same phrase, bow, or collective breath, to provide a sense of closure and familiarity.

You can revisit this principle and the other six in our full guide at heart2brainyoga.kit.com.

Looking Ahead

We’re thrilled to invite you to continue the conversation at our Trauma-Informed Yoga Community Circle, a free live event where we’ll discuss these principles and how to bring them to life in your teaching. Sign up today at heart2brainyoga.kit.com/heart2brainlive.

Thank You

Thank you for all you do for your students, clients, and communities. Your dedication to fostering safety, inclusion, and healing inspires us every day.

As you continue your own wellness journey as a yoga teacher, educator, caregiver, or holistic practitioner, may you find joy and balance in your practice and teaching. Take care of yourself so you can keep sharing your light with the world.
