Bring Mindfulness Home: Simple Holiday Practices for Families

Create Connection and Calm with Your Kids

Namaste, Reader!

The holiday season is a time of joy, but it can also bring its fair share of stress for families. As your child enjoys yoga in class, you can bring some of those calming and bonding practices home. These simple activities are designed to help your family feel connected and grounded - no matter how busy the season gets!

Activity 1: Back-to-Back Breathing

Why it works: This practice promotes deep breathing, relaxation, and a sense of connection.

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor with your child, back-to-back
  2. Close your eyes or soften your gaze
  3. Take a deep breath in together - noticing how your backs move as you breathe
  4. Try matching your breath to each other - inhale and exhale in harmony
  5. Continue this for 2-3 minutes, or as long as it feels calming

This gentle activity creates a physical and emotional sense of support and synchrony.

Activity 2: Appreciation Circle

Why it works: This Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) practice encourages gratitude and strengthens relationships.

  1. Gather as a family and sit in a circle (or together on the couch)
  2. Take turns sharing one thing you appreciate about each person in the group. Example: I appreciate how you made me laugh today or I love the way you shared your toys with your sibling
  3. Encourage everyone to listen with an open heart, without interruption
  4. End the circle by sharing one thing everyone is grateful for in that moment

This practice fosters positive communication and reminds everyone of the love and support within your family.

Wishing You a Mindful Holiday Season

As we approach the holidays, remember that small, intentional moments can make all the difference. These practices help build meaningful memories and reinforce the mindfulness skills your child is learning in yoga.

Thank you for being part of this community. I’m so grateful for the chance to connect, grow, and create healing spaces together.
