Why it’s Important Our Students Trust Us : Creating Reliability and Consistency in the Yoga Space

Namaste, Reader!

We’re thrilled to welcome new members from the Maryland Yoga Teacher Community and the Kids Yoga Community! Thank you for joining us in this journey of exploring trauma-informed and accessible yoga practices. We're so glad to have you here!

Last week, we introduced the first principle of trauma-informed teaching: Offer Clear Context and Framing. By ensuring students know what to expect in a yoga class, we reduce uncertainty, creating a safer environment for all.

This week, we move forward with the Second Principle of Trauma-Informed Yoga Teaching: Create Reliability and Consistency.

The Importance of Consistency in the Yoga Space

When teaching yoga, consistency is a critical component in fostering trust and creating a space where students feel safe and supported. For those who have experienced trauma, a disrupted sense of safety can manifest in their minds and bodies. Yoga becomes a refuge—a place where they can reconnect with themselves. By maintaining a reliable class structure and consistently showing up as teachers, we offer students a foundation to ground themselves and heal.

From how we open a class, introduce sequences, and provide cues to how we close the practice—each element holds an opportunity to build trust. This level of predictability helps calm the nervous system, enabling students to feel present, safe, and empowered.

Reflective Prompt: How Are We Consistently Showing Up?

Take a moment to reflect: In what ways are we, as yoga teachers and educators, consistently showing up for our students and ourselves? How can we continue to offer reliable, consistent support in our classes, fostering a sense of safety and stability for everyone who steps onto their mat?

Consistency is the key to building deep connections and trust in any space, but especially one of healing and growth like a trauma-informed yoga class.

Thank you for your commitment to creating safer, more inclusive yoga experiences!
